2019-2020 gorilla tracking guide in Africa, mountain gorillas can only be seen in Uganda Rwanda, and DR-Congo, gorillas are endangered species and whoever want to trek them must go to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park of Uganda, Volcanoes national park of Rwanda and in Virunga national park of DR-Congo.

In 2018 mountain gorilla census shows that the gorilla population has increased from 880 to 1004 combining Uganda, Rwanda, and DR-Congo, however, more than half of those mountain gorilla population are found in Uganda’s Bwindi impenetrable forest national park making Uganda the best place to go for you gorilla tracking safari because has another park called Mgahinga gorilla national park where you can as well enjoy both gorilla and golden monkey trekking. Mgahinga national park bordering with Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Virunga national park in Congo, Mgahinga can be accessed via the Kisoro district in southwestern Uganda.

How to get there for gorilla tracking safari in Africa

How to get to Bwindi forest and Mgahinga national parks in Uganda, both park can be accessed by road and by air, form Kampala the capital city of Uganda, or from Entebbe international airport takes you about 9 hours drive to reach Bwindi forest or Mgahinga

However there is the option of flying to Bwindi or Mgahinga, those who don’t want to spend 9 hours on the road can fly from Entebbe airport or Kajansi airstrip to Kisoro airport or Kihihi airstrip which will save on the long-distance drive from Entebbe to Bwindi forest.

Fly to Kigali Rwanda and go gorilla tracking in Uganda

How to get to Virunga national park in Congo for gorilla trekking

Currently, there are 2 easiest ways to access Virunga national park for your gorilla trekking safari in DR-Congo, one of the best way to go gorilla trekking in Congo is via Kigali in Rwanda which mean that you fly to Kigali and cross via Gisenyi border into Goma town in Congo where you will start your Congo gorilla safari. From Kigali airport to Gisenyi border where you cross into Congo takes about 4 and a half hours.

How many habituated gorilla families in Uganda

Currently, Uganda has the highest number of habituated gorilla groups, for now, over 21 habituated gorilla groups/families are open to tourism in both Bwindi forest and in Mgahinga, this means that currently Uganda 168 gorilla available per day for trekking.

Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is divided into 4 sectors, Buhoma gorilla tracking sector which is located in the northern part of Bwindi forest, Buhoma also acts as park headquarters where the first gorilla tracking started from in 1993, Nkuringo gorilla tracking sector also found in the northern part of the park, Rushaga and Ruhija sectors are located in the southern part of Bwindi and also Nyakagezi gorilla family found in Mgahinga gorilla national park.

How to get gorilla tracking permits in Uganda, Rwanda, and DR-Congo

gorilla tracking can be done any day throughout the year from 1st January to 31st December but most tourists prefer coming for gorilla safari during the dry season starting from the end of May, June, July, August, September, October, December, and also in January. Other months of February, March, April, May, and November are considered as a wet season but this cannot stop anyone from tracking mountain gorillas. Please NOTE that the gorilla tracking experience is the same in all three countries Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo.
