History of Lake Nyabihoko?
According to local legend, Lake Nyabihoko’s creation is attributed to a series of events involving Mutuumo, a prosperous Muhima cattle farmer. It is said that Mutuumo owned a sacred calf of multiple colours, which he was warned by the gods never to eat, even if it died naturally. But, in one of his exchange trade safaris in Rwanda, this calf died, and Mutuumo’s ravenous servants, except his wife’s pleas, pleased upon it. This act violated the family oath and angered the gods.
As an upshot, his gods punished him and the entire family by causing heavy rains that took twenty-eight days. The resulting floods transformed the land, including Mutuumo’s farm, into the modern-day Lake Nyabihoko. While Mutuumo survived, his wife, daughter, servants, and his wealth were lost. Nevertheless, his illicit son, who was living with the servants, survived.
Cultural significance.
Lake Nyabihoko has significant cultural and historical importance in the region. Today, the lake is home to the Mutuumo Island Resort, which pays tribute to the legend. On this island, remains of the old traditional Ankole homestead are found, providing visitors with a brief look into the area’s rich heritage and diversity.
