backpacker’s gorilla safari in Uganda

backpacker’s gorilla safari in Uganda

Backpacker’s Gorilla Safari in Uganda through Kisoro Tours

Exploring Uganda’s gorillas on a backpacker’s budget can be an incredible adventure ever! Uganda has two main national parks where mountain gorillas can viewed which are Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both parks are located in the southwestern part of the country and they are the primary destinations for gorilla trekking not only in Uganda but the whole world. Here’s a rough guide to planning a gorilla safari on a budget:

  1. Research and Booking: Look for budget-friendly accommodations and tour operators that offer gorilla trekking packages. Compare prices and read reviews to ensure you’re getting a good deal without compromising on experience or safety.
  2. Choose Off-Peak Seasons: Gorilla permits can be quite expensive, so consider travelling during the low season (March-May and October-November) when permit prices may be lower.
  3. Group Tours: Joining a group tour can significantly reduce costs as you can share expenses like transportation and guide fees with others.
  4. Accommodation: Look for budget lodges, hostels, or campsites near the national parks. Staying outside the parks can be more affordable than luxury lodges inside the park.
  5. Transportation: Opt for public transport or shared taxis to get around, as they are usually cheaper than private vehicles or hiring a driver.
  6. Pack Wisely: Bring sturdy hiking boots, lightweight clothing, a rain jacket, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, and a good camera for capturing unforgettable moments.
  7. Gorilla Permit: This is the most significant expense. As of my last update, a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs around $700-$800 for foreign non-residents. However, prices may have changed, so be sure to check the most recent rates.
  8. Trekking Tips: Be physically prepared for the trek, as it can be challenging. Stay hydrated, listen to your guide’s instructions, and maintain a respectful distance from the gorillas.
  9. Other Activities: While gorilla trekking is the highlight, there are other activities you can enjoy in Uganda, such as chimpanzee tracking, nature walks, and cultural experiences.
  10. Travel Insurance: Don’t forget to purchase travel insurance that covers trekking and medical emergencies in case of unexpected situations.

Best time to go for a backpacker’s gorilla safari in Uganda?

The best time to go for a backpacker’s gorilla safari in Uganda depends on several factors, including weather, gorilla behaviour, and tourist demand. Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Dry Season (June to September and December to February):
    • Weather: The dry season offers clear skies and less rainfall, making trekking conditions more favourable.
    • Gorilla Trekking: Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but during the dry season, the trails are generally less muddy and easier to navigate.
    • Tourist Demand: The dry season tends to be the peak tourist season, so accommodation and permits may be in higher demand, potentially leading to higher prices.
  2. Wet Season (March to May and October to November):
    • Weather: These months experience more rainfall, leading to lush green landscapes and fewer tourists.
    • Gorilla Trekking: Trekking during the wet season can be more challenging due to muddy trails and occasional heavy rainfall. However, permits may be more readily available, and accommodation prices could be lower.
    • Tourist Demand: Tourist numbers are generally lower during the wet season, offering a more intimate experience with nature and wildlife.

Considering these factors, the best time for a backpacker’s gorilla safari in Uganda might be during the shoulder seasons (March to May and October to November). During these months, you can benefit from lower tourist numbers, potentially lower accommodation prices, and a more authentic wilderness experience. However, be prepared for some rain and muddy conditions during trekking. If you prefer drier weather and don’t mind the higher tourist numbers and prices, the dry season (June to September and December to February) might be more suitable for you

What is included in a backpacker’s gorilla safari in Uganda

A backpacker gorilla safari in Uganda typically includes several key components:

  1. Gorilla Trekking Permit: This is the primary reason for the safari. It allows you to track and observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Gorilla trekking permits are limited to 8 people per gorilla family so it’s recommended to obtain it in advance to avoid disappointments.
  2. Accommodation: Backpacker safaris usually include budget-friendly accommodation options such as hostels, guesthouses, or campsites. These accommodations may vary in comfort level but are generally chosen for their affordability.
  3. Transportation: Transportation to and from the starting point of the gorilla trekking adventure is usually included. This could involve minibuses, shared taxis, or other forms of transportation depending on the itinerary.
  4. Guides: Professional guides are typically provided for the gorilla trekking experience. They lead the trekking group through the forest, help locate the gorillas, and provide insights into their behaviour and habitat.
  5. Meals: Depending on the tour package, meals may or may not be included. In backpacker safaris, meals are often provided at budget-friendly eateries or prepared by the accommodation providers.
  6. Park Fees: Entrance fees to the national park where the gorilla trekking takes place are usually included in the package.
  7. Optional Activities: Some backpacker safaris may include optional activities or side trips such as nature walks, visits to local communities, or other wildlife encounters.
  8. Equipment: Basic trekking equipment such as walking sticks may be provided by the tour operator.

It’s essential to review the specific itinerary and inclusions provided by the tour operator before booking to ensure that you know exactly what is covered in the package. Additionally, be prepared for physical exertion during the gorilla trekking experience as it often involves hiking through dense forest terrain.

Choice of lodges for backpacker’s gorilla safari

For backpackers on a gorilla safari in Uganda, the choice of lodges typically leans towards budget-friendly options that still provide comfort and convenience. Here are some popular choices:

  1. Bwindi Backpackers Lodge: Located near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, this lodge offers budget accommodation options such as dormitories and private rooms. It’s a popular choice for backpackers due to its proximity to the gorilla trekking starting points.
  2. Ruhija Gorilla Friends Resort Camp: Situated in Ruhija, one of the sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, this camp offers budget accommodation in the form of tents and cottages. It provides basic amenities in a rustic setting.
  3. Buhoma Community Rest Camp: This camp is located in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It offers budget accommodation options such as dormitories and cottages. The camp is operated by the local community, providing an authentic experience.
  4. Nkuringo Gorilla Camp: Situated near the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, this camp offers budget-friendly accommodation options such as tents and cottages. It provides stunning views of the park and is known for its friendly staff.
  5. Gorilla Valley Lodge: While slightly higher in price compared to the others on this list, Gorilla Valley Lodge still offers relatively affordable accommodation options. It’s located near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and provides comfortable rooms and cottages with modern amenities.
  6. Gorilla Conservation Camp: This camp offers budget accommodation near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It provides simple yet comfortable rooms and tents, making it suitable for backpackers looking for an affordable stay close to the gorilla trekking starting points.

These lodges cater to backpackers by offering affordable rates, basic amenities, and proximity to gorilla trekking starting points. It’s essential to book accommodation in advance, especially during peak seasons, to ensure availability. Additionally, consider factors such as location, reviews, and included amenities when choosing the lodge that best fits your preferences and budget
