Dry Season (June to September): This is typically considered the best time to visit Nyungwe. During the dry season, the weather is relatively stable, with lower chances of rainfall. The dry months make hiking and outdoor activities more comfortable and enjoyable. It’s an excellent time for chimpanzee trekking, as the chimps are often easier to spot when food is scarcer, and they stick to certain areas.

Rainy Season (October to May): Nyungwe experiences two rainy seasons, the long rains from October to November and the short rains from February to May. While the rain can make some trails slippery and challenging, it’s a fantastic time for birdwatching. Many migratory bird species visit Nyungwe during this period, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts. The forest is lush and green during the rainy season, creating a vibrant landscape.

Ultimately, the choice of when to visit Nyungwe depends on your interests. If you prioritize clear skies and comfortable hiking conditions, the dry season is ideal. However, if you’re a birdwatcher or don’t mind occasional rain showers, the rainy season offers unique wildlife and lush scenery.
