Where is Echuya Forest Found in Uganda?
Echuya Forest (Bamboo Forest as locals call it in Kisoro) has been home to Batwa (Pygmies) for so many years, I grow up in Kisoro and we all knew Echuya forest was more than a home to the Batwa (Pygmies) as they used to get everything from this forest, for example, most of the food as they hunted the small animals in the forest for meat, firewood for cooking and stayed there.
Which Activity one can do in Echuya Forest?
Echuya Forest crosses Rwanda but Uganda has the biggest part of the forest well known as a bird-watching destination in southwestern Uganda near Rwanda and DR-Congo about 15 km from Kisoro Town, And also easy to connect to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Virunga National Park in Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Echuya Forest is located in both Kisoro District and Rubanda District, the southern part of Echuya forest runs along the border of Rwanda. The Echuya forest is located between Lake Bunyonyi in the East, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Lake Mutanda in the southwest.
Echuya forest has rich biodiversity along the Albertine rift Valley, Echuya forest is an important site of global biodiversity and the top bird-watching area just because of its high diversity of bird species in this forest which includes endemic species.
Echuya forest is commonly well known as a bamboo forest because the biggest part of the forest is covered by bamboo, particularly along Kabale, Rubanda, and Kisoro roads.
Echuya forest is surrounded by a high population of rural communities that depend on natural resources from this forest-like firewood, bamboo for construction, medicinal plants, etc.
