Uganda Wildlife Authority has increased Uganda gorilla permit costs starting from 1st July 2020; the new gorilla permit price increment for tracking gorillas in Uganda is from $600 per person to $700 per person effective from July 2020.
The proposal of increasing the gorilla permit price in Uganda was welcomed by many Ugandans because it will reap big for the Country in terms of foreign income from gorilla safaris. However, in response to Rwanda’s gorilla permit price, Uganda will still remain the most affordable and cheapest destination for gorilla tracking safari because the Uganda permit will cost $700 per person for East foreign non-residents while in Rwanda gorilla permit cast $1500 per person for foreign residents.
For some time many conservationists have been urging Uganda Wildlife Authority to increase permit prices to trek gorillas in both Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park and in Mgahinga gorilla national park of Uganda because it generates more facilitation for conserving gorillas of Uganda as well as improving the standards of living for people living around Bwindi forest and Mgahinga gorilla park.
Rwanda Development Board doubled its gorilla permit price in May 2017 from $750 to $1500, this left tour operators in Rwanda and service providers in shock but there was nothing to do but to carry on, Rwanda Development Board said that the reason why the increasing gorilla permit prices were to raise more money for the conservation of Rwanda gorillas in Volcanoes national park.
When Rwanda increased its gorilla tracking permit price it created a high demand for the gorilla safari in Uganda because of the affordability of gorilla permits, more Ugandan tour operators started offering Uganda gorilla safaris that start and end at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda because it is still cheaper tracking mountain gorillas in Uganda, for example at $1500 you can go for 3 days Uganda gorilla tracking safari all included while in Rwanda it’s just one gorilla permit only.
You can easily fly into Kigali Rwanda and trek gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and in Mgahinga gorilla national park both parks are located in southwestern Uganda at the border of Rwanda which makes it easier for those who want to see mountain gorillas in Uganda at a cheaper price. From Kigali airport to Bwindi forest or Mgahinga takes you only 3 to 4 hours drive this means that it is shorter if you access Bwindi forest via Kigali Rwanda than accessing it from Entebbe airport because from Entebbe to Bwindi forest takes about 9 to 10 hours to drive so flying to Kigali and track in Uganda helps you to save time and money.
