Mt Sabinyo is one of the three volcanoes in Mgahinga gorilla national park, hiking to the top of Sabyinyo gives you an opportunity to standing in 3 countries Uganda, Rwanda, and DR-Congo, Mount Sabyinyo also known as “old man’s teeth” by the by local people in Kisoro area because of its shape which looks like old man’s teeth. When hiking Mt Sabyinyo has 3 peaks, this hike takes about 7 to 8 hours and you step in 3 countries without a visa and passport, if you are interested in hiking mount Sabinyo we recommend that you have to be physically fit in order to enjoy this hike because Mt Sabyinyo is very steep so we advise you to plan accordingly.
Mt Gahinga is the easiest to hike among the three volcanoes found in Mgahinga gorilla national park, it takes only about 4 to 5 hours to hike to top and back but it also depends on one’s fitness it can take fewer hours. Gahinga means a pile of stones/rocks and you will be able to see many piles of stones almost everywhere once you reach the Kisoro area. Hiking Mt Gahinga takes you through a bamboo forest and many other different types of vegetation before reaching Crater Lake on the top summit of mount Gahinga.
Mt Muhabura volcano is also located in Mgahinga gorilla national park, Mount Muhabura is the highest volcano. Muhabura means “the guide” in the local language, the main reason to why local people named Mt Muhabura “the guide” it was because in the early days there was no proper road network and Mount Muhabura is very tall and it can be seen from very far in all direction within Kisoro area and in Kigali region.
Mount Muhabura hiking you don’t have to be an experienced hiker but it requires one to be physically fit, it takes about 8 to 9 hours to hike up to the summit of Mt Muhabura and back to the base, mount Muhabura hiking starts to point at 7:00 am so you must be at the starting point before 7:00 am, hiking Muhabura will give the opportunity to have a good view of some Rwanda, Congo, and Uganda.
