Information about mountain gorillas there is only 1004 mountain gorillas still living in the whole world, mountain gorillas are also endangered species which need a lot of combined efforts to protect this greatest ape
Gorillas are so much threatened not only due to the high demand for the forest which is their home but also demand for their young ones (infants), poaching, also because of Congo political instability making mountain gorillas even more threatened in Virunga National Park on D.R.Congo side where it is always different civil wars, this has been a major problem in this area.
The good news is that the conserving mountain gorillas are the primary conservation Key in Rwanda and Uganda as it is the main tourist attraction and one of the main source of revenue to both countries so gorilla must be well protected, during your gorilla tracking in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo, Kisoro Tours Uganda encouraged its clients to ask the park ranger guide more questions regarding on information about mountain gorillas so that by end of their gorilla trekking you have acquired much knowledge about the biggest primates of the world.
Another information about mountain gorillas is that tourism has contributed towards the growth of the mountain gorilla population, apart from the current rise in the numbers of mountain gorillas from 880 in the 2013 mountain gorilla census to 1004 in the 2018 gorilla population census, also in Uganda and Rwanda side the main threat for gorilla survival comes from humans because of the local communities living around the park who keeps encroaching on the forest which is the home to mountain gorillas
In efforts to save mountain gorillas, the Uganda and Rwanda governments introduced profit-sharing from the total sells of gorilla permits whereby 7% of the money on each permit sold goes to the communities living around gorilla national parks, this profit sharing is done annually
The 7% is put directly to community development projects which have a direct impact improving the living standards of the communities surrounding the gorilla population census of Rwanda and both Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, this money goes to projects like building schools, water tanks (clean water for the community), building health centers in the community.
It should also be noted that this money is given in interests of mountain gorilla conservation so that more local people can benefit from it, Communities who live around the gorilla national parks are overpopulated which means that their sanitation is not good.
The gorilla trekking experience is the same in both countries, the differences are in gorilla permit prices whereby in Uganda trekking permit costs only $600 per person while in gorilla population census per person
The advantage Rwanda has is that it is easy to access Volcanoes National Park, it is only about 2 and half hours drive from Kigali International Airport to Kingi park headquarters of Volcanoes Park and it is also the starting point for tourists going to trek gorillas in Rwanda.
