Nkuringo is not only famous for gorilla tracking, but there are also other interesting activities you venture into after or before gorilla tracking in the deep forest of Bwindi as you learn more about Bwindi jungle ecosystems. As soon as the sun strikes out different mammals and birds that are habitant of Bwindi Jungle start s to stir as the day begins, it’s important to weak up early and go out to appreciate what the Nkuringo area has to offer apart from gorilla tracking as we are going to see below. Please don’t forget your binoculars for any hiking trail; you won’t believe what your eyes are telling you they see.
Kashasha River Trail (17 km, 5-6 hrs). This trail starts from Nkuringo UWA offices and zigzags gently through the uneven beautiful landscapes of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, as you will have a few stopovers on the several viewpoints overlooking lush mist-shrouded hills and valleys before walking into the jungle to find the Kashasha River, once you reach the river you have to hike along the river for about one hour.
This trail has 3 routes, the 1st one starts from Nkuringo Park offices which is an approximately 12 kilometers hike to reach the Nteko trading center, 2nd one is an approximately 5 kilometers hike up and down in the steep valleys to reach Ivy River and walk back to the bass. The 3rd one is the most interesting and can start from the Nteko trading center, Ivy River Trail in the Nkuringo sector can also to the Buhoma sector on the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Buhoma is also the park headquarters of Bwindi Forest. On this trail, you have the opportunity to meet different primates who are inhabitants of the area with countless bird species, and other mammal species.
Have the opportunity to walk into the Batwa community with a chance to see their way of life, and also learn about the lush forest flora’s medicinal properties as Batwa prepare it, they will also intertrain you with their famous traditional songs and other techniques they use to survive which includes hunting.
This waterfall is 7 kilometers from Nkuringo UWA offices, this walking trail takes you through villages and you enter the forest which is rich with different wildlife and birds, as you walk through, you will see children taking their domestic animals to graze, as adults and parents go out to their gardens with hoes of their shoulders and a basket on their heads.
