Uganda is home of various camping spots; it may take you some time to select which one is ideal for your stay. Even though these camping sites are not so much developed as those in the developed countries, you can as well camp anywhere in the country. Almost every lodge or guesthouse will let you to put up a tent somewhere on their property. It may not be the nicest camping site in Uganda, but it will provide a place to rest for the night.
How to Go Camping in Uganda?
It will make things much easier and cheaper for you in the long run.
You should be able to rent a nice 4WD with a rooftop tent for about $90 USD per day. Overall, the camping rentals aren’t as well-equipped as those in Namibia, but they’re adequate for getting out and about to enjoy camping in Uganda.

Camping in Uganda Costs.
In Uganda, camping is nearly often charged per person rather than per site. If you’re traveling alone, this is fantastic news. If you’re in a group, things might pile up!
Camping prices in Uganda vary greatly. The prices can range from as low as UGX10,000 for a person per night to USD 15 depending on the amenities provided at the campsite.

Do not expect much in the way of bells and whistles, or nicely maintained facilities, and generally the camping sites in Uganda are preferably modest.
What to expect on a camping site in Uganda?
The majority of the Uganda camping sites we’ve included are privately run, but we’ve also included a few community campsites that we quite enjoyed. These are run by local community members, and the proceeds go back into the community. They are an excellent way to make a positive contribution while traveling, and we encourage you to support them.
Uganda Wild Camping
While it is technically permissible to wild camp in Uganda, it is difficult to find a good place because the country is highly populated. You’re also likely to attract unwelcome attention from locals, which is less a matter of safety and more of privacy.
If you go wild camping, please leave no trace. Don’t leave any trash (particularly used TP). The Deuce Ultralight Trowel is an excellent trekking tool for leaving no trace.

Top Tips for Camping in Uganda
Have a decent set of earplugs. Trust us on this. Uganda is LOUD, therefore pack some decent earplugs if you want to sleep well.
Always have some water with you just in case. Some sites have drinkable water, but many do not, so it is advisable to carry some on hand just in case. After all, you never know what’s around the corner.

The Haven is certainly one of our favorite camping sites in Uganda, thanks to its amazing views of the great Nile River, superb animal viewing, and a soothing pool.
- Bunyonyi Overland Resort
Bunyonyi Overland Resort is one of the top camping locations in Uganda.
Price: $12 USD each person.
Facilities include; communal bathrooms with hot water showers, Bar and Restaurant, Pretty decent WIFI (at the pub and restaurant), Non-potable water availability, Lounge seats and lake access
Activities:
Swimming, Canoeing and Boat trips.
Bunyonyi Overland Resort is surely an excellent choice for people wishing to camp in Uganda. Set right on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi, this popular destination is great for people looking for a resort atmosphere without having to pay for an expensive hotel. The lakeside sundeck is really soothing, and the views from the restaurant are spectacular. It’s also a fantastic choice for digital nomads, as it has decent WIFI. While it is more expensive to camp in Uganda, it is a pleasant area to spend a few days. If you stay for more than three days, we’ve heard you can negotiate a lesser rate.
Pro tip: Reserve a campsite in front of one of the safari tents. From here, you may enjoy fantastic lake views and use the power station near the safari tent.
- Rwenzori Turaco View Community Camp.
Price: $5 USD per person.
Facilities:
Communal toilets with warm (ish) showers, Basic bar and eatery and non-potable water availability.
Activities:
Guided nature walks, Hot springs and Community tours
Access to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
This community campsite in Uganda is an excellent example of community-based tourism (CBT) in action. CBT sends all revenues back into community initiatives such as a youth center, women’s programs, and environmental protection.
The camp also provides a variety of interesting activities, including trekking in the Rwenzori Mountains, local walks, community tours, and visits to neighboring hot springs – all highly recommended!

- Karamoja Arts Eco Lodge.
Price: 10,000 UGX per person per night.

Karamoja Arts Eco Lodge, located in the rugged and arid Karamoja, is a true oasis in the desert. This is a well-known camping site in Uganda continuously set over for overlanders. It is well considerably one of the best places according the encounters you are likely to spot around.
- Lake Mutanda Community Camp.

While not fully equipped for camping in Uganda, Lake Mutanda Community Camp’s lakeside vistas, paired with a backdrop of gnarly volcanoes, make for a fairly amazing site to pitch up for a couple of nights.

As an added treat, you may swim in the refreshing lake and possibly see a family of otters from the deck! The camp also offers various (expensive) interesting tours, such as visits to neighboring Batwa Pygmy settlements and travels to the nearby Mgahinga National Park. The manager is rather pushy with these tours, so if you aren’t interested, be prepared to gently decline several times.
- Masindi Hotel
Price: $7 USD per night.
Facilities:
Bathroom blocks with hot water showers (and we mean HOT!), WIFI (at the bar and restaurant), Bar and Restaurant and Welcome drink upon arrival.
- Lake Nkuruba Community Campsite
Priced at 30,000 UGX per person each night.
Facilities: WIFI, Bar and Restaurant, Non-potable water availability, and Bathroom blocks with hot-water showers (woodfire or donkey)
Activities include: swimming and guided walks.

The surrounding jungle is home to a variety of monkeys that are quite entertaining to watch; however, vervet monkeys are very wicked and can take your food if you are not careful. Keep an eye out! There is also a restaurant that serves wonderful meals at a reasonable price; however, make sure to order well in advance because they move painfully slowly. The WIFI is also quite good, making this Uganda camping spot an ideal stopover for digital nomads trying to get some work done. The fact that you can swim in the lake is just the cherry on top!
