Tourism development of areas where tourism is located

Tourism development of areas where tourism is located: Tourism is the activities of people traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment which can be for leisure, business, or other purposes for not more than one consecutive year. The following are some of the main contributions of tourism to the area where they are located.

Advantages of Tourism development to the areas where tourism is located

  • Growth and boost in Economic activities
  • Boost wide-scale industry revenues
  • Infrastructure development
  • Tourism improves the brand image of the area it is located.
  • Source of employment generation
  • Improvement in standards of living
  • Cultural growth
  • Introduction of new technologies

Disadvantages of Tourism development to the areas where tourism is located

  • Loss of the cultural identity of the place and community
  • Increase in aggression and crime rates
  • Increased prices on goods and services
  • Dependence on tourism
  • Increased pollution
  • Destruction of historical monuments and natural landmarks

Growth and boost in Economic activities

Tourism is an industry with the capability to transform international development. Tourism is also the biggest service industry globally, accounting for nearly 10 percent of the world (GDP). Over 293 million jobs or one in eleven jobs around the world is within the tourism industry.

Globally tourism industry is currently featured in the three of the Sustainable Development Goals, including goal number 8 which requires societies to create the conditions that allow people to have quality jobs that stimulate the economy and do not harm the environment making the Tourism industry uniquely situated to have a positive impact on the number of communities in the where tourism is located

 Boost wide-scale industry revenues

When we talk about the supply-side tourism industry, tourism is defined as a group of industries providing services and products for the different needs of tourists and travelers in leisure, business, and other related tourism and travel activities. This means that the things tourists spend on the consumption of these services and products become the revenues that bring out the clear meaning of tourism development in areas where tourism is located.

Infrastructure development

The development of the tourism industry anywhere in the world relies on the development of infrastructure, which services the needs of a tourist and encourages investment in the sector. Infrastructure like accommodation, restaurants, built-up attractions, tours, and transport is primarily developed by the government or private sector so this means that the tourism industry leads to infrastructure development of an area where tourism is located.

Tourism improves the brand image of an area where tourism is located.

To improve the sustainability of tourism or tourist destination, it will help in making the travelers/tourists’ experiences more memorable and enhances tourist satisfaction which improves the brand image of the tourist destination where the tourism is located, marketing tourism is not simply a job to build a very good brand image to attract tourists to an area.

Source of employment generation

The tourism industry contributes to more economic activities but also creates more employment opportunities for the people where tourism is located. For example; tour guides, Rangers, Waiters and waitresses, tour operators, and many more lead a significant role in tourism and contributes to the development of areas where tourism is located because tourism first creates demand as an activity.

Improvement in standards of living

The population of an area where tourism is located has a significant effect on the infrastructure development which creates the demand during the seasons and is crucial in determining how much money one should invest in developing the tourist destination, in the end, this will lead to the development of good accommodation and good transport systems which improves people’s life living in the area where tourism is located.

Cultural growth

In the early days, tourism and culture were viewed as largely separate, currently, cultural resources are seen as part of the cultural heritage of tourist destinations which is also related to the education of the locals about cultural identities but again also tourism is largely seen as a leisure-related activity if you separate it from the everyday life.

The role of cultural attractions in motivating tourists and distinguishing destinations from one another become more obvious, culture and tourism have therefore led to the growth of culture and development of some cultural sites like Kasubi tombs in the Buganda kingdom of Uganda.

Introduction of new technologies

Technology in the tourism industry has transformed the lives of many people based on the way it has changed their way of doing things. The hospitality industry and tourism are one of the sectors that have witnessed greater changes brought about by technology.

The tourism industry is ranked among the best performing industry around the world and technology has contributed a lot towards this success of the tourism industry because of this success, there has been the introduction of new systems that are used in advertising and bookings.

The tourism industry has given a boost to the economy in different countries in terms of consumer spending, employment opportunities, and other development because of this tourism can provide a great push to the economy of the given country. But it has also contributed to the destruction of the areas where it is located in the following ways as we are going to see in different disadvantages below

Disadvantages of Tourism development to the areas where tourism is located

Loss of the cultural identity of the place and community

Loss of cultural identity is one of the negative effects of the area where tourism is located, local people are seen trying to copy the lifestyles of tourists, like dressing like tourists, trying to talk and behave like tourists which may result in the loss of native culture and traditions.

In order to satisfy all the needs of the tourists, locals, where the tourism is located, may have to change their traditional style of life like the lodges are built and designed in the style of the tourists like because of the demand local people where tourism is located have no choice but to adapt the style.

Increase in aggression and crime rates

It is important for travelers to do some research about the norms and traditions of every new place they intend to visit before traveling.

For example, it is ok to wear shorts in London, however, if you travel to other Africa such as Uganda, it may offend the locals.

Travers quite often, out of ignorance fail to respect local culture and moral values so it may cause a growth of irritation in locals because of the bad behavior of the tourists which disturbs the local culture.

Increased prices on goods and services

During the high tourist season, most prices of different goods and other essential services may arise in the areas where tourism is located. Tourist areas tend to be more expensive than in other local places, yes it is good for the business owners but it can negatively affect the locals because, during the high tourist season in the area where tourism is located, the prices of goods and services rise which makes the locals less affordable goods and services.

For example, local people have to pay higher prices to enjoy a meal in their favorite restaurant in the area where tourism is located.

Dependence on tourism

If a tourist area is heavily dependent on tourism, it is not a good thing for the locals and the government because something happens and tourists stop coming. For example, if something bad like terrorism or a natural disaster happens then there will be a very big problem because there will be income for the area affected.

Increased in pollution

As the environment it means that more people are in the area, the more waste is accumulated like plastic waste and different takeaway packaging among others.

The lodges and hotels accommodate an increased number of tourists, during high season many to be built more lights and red signs on the roads and creating light pollution in the area where tourism is located.

Destruction of historical monuments and natural landmarks

In some tourist areas, sometimes tourists damage historical monuments or natural historical landmarks, and some damage is done by accident. However, there are also people who do such acts of vandalism and it has led to the closing of some historical tourist places.
