This 7 Days Hiking Rwenzori Mountains is the central circuit that is recommended to most the travelers starting from the base of Rwenzori national park but if you are coming to Entebbe airport or Kampala you may have to add an extra day in order to complete 7 days Rwenzori climbing circuit

This Hiking Rwenzori Mountains can start in Uganda or Rwanda depending on your preference and also we will pick you up from Entebbe airport or from Kigali airport at the end of the tour for your flight back home, all meals, camping gear, hiking fees, and all park entrance fees and all-mountain hiking services mentioned in this itinerary are included.

Hiking Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda

Arrival at Entebbe or Kigali

We advise all our participating in this 7 Days Hiking Rwenzori Mountains to arrive a day before you start hiking so that we have time to transfer you to the starting pion of Mt Rwenzori national park in the Kasese district.

Day 1: Hike from Nyakalengijja up to Nyabitaba hut

After breakfast, we will transfer you to the starting point and hand you over to the park ranger/hiking guide for a briefing about the whole hike after starting the hike from Nyakalengija through the Bakonzo settlements up to the Rwenzori national park and start the central circuit trail hike through the thick tropical forest. Mt Rwenzori national park is also home to various animal species like forest elephants, chimpanzees, hyrax, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, duiker, and three-horned chameleon among many more. Some of the bird species include; Handsome Francolin, Rwenzori Turaco, Long-eared Owl, Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Strange Weaver, Archers’ Robin-chat, Rwenzori Batis among many others so it’s not just hiking there is a lot more to see during this hike. Dinner and overnight at Nyabitaba hut

Day 2: Hike from Nyabitaba up to John matte hut

After breakfast at John matte hut, climb through thick forest shrubs for about 40 minutes which takes you to Kurt Shafer bright at the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers, then hike through the bamboo forests and also on slippery rocks for a few hours, during this hike you will see various bird species in this bamboo forest.

After the climb up to Nyamulejju rock shelter, have a stopover here for lunch as you enjoy the view of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke ahead of you and after continuing your hike through the alpine forest up to John Matte hut for dinner and overnight, John Matte hut is near river Bujuku so you can enjoy evening swimming the water is so cold but so clean and refreshing, after enjoying the view of Margherita glacier, mount Stanley between Alexandra and Margherita peaks.

Day 3: Hike from John matte to Bujuku hut

In the morning after breakfast, cross-river Bujuku and hike through the forest to the lower Bigo bog which is a swampy area in the valley which is considered the hardest part when hiking mountain Rwenzori because this part is so boggy

As you hike you may see giant lobelias, everlasting flowers, and groundsels after here you will then take a steep hike along a ridge that takes you to the start of the upper Bigo bog

After the board hike, you will try to walk through the remaining small boggy area with no walk boards to reach Bujuku hut where you will have a clear view of Lake Bujuku, Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Mount Stanley also from here, you can as well see mount Speke and Mount Stanley. Dinner and overnight at Bujuku hut.

Day 4: Hike from Bujuku to Elena hut

Hike from Bujuku hut and continue your hike to Elena hut, hike through the sides of the upper Bigo bog, and walk through the steep slopes on the Lake Bujuku, this trail takes you to 4372-meter high Scott-Elliot pass, hike through swamps as you go over a steep area at the top of the gully using a metal ladder, after descending to Kitandara Lakes as you hike to the Elena Hut

Here you must be prepared because Elena hut is part of Mount Stanley which is too cold, this is the highest point of Rwenzori mountain, at this point also a good view of Mount Baker and Mount Speke. Dinner and overnight at Elena hut.

Day 5:  Hike from Elena hut to Kitandara

On this day you will start very early, hike to the top of Mount Stanley, Margherita peak, and climb through the Stanley plateau. It is a steep rocky point and also you may have to use the ropes to help you hike but your guide will show you how to use it while on the ice because some equipment used on the glacial parts you will be required to use ice ax and crampons.

After hiking for a few hours you will reach the bottom of the Margherita glacier which is a very challenging part of hiking mountain Rwenzori. Hike to the top of Mount Stanley, Margherita peak (5109m). Dinner and overnight at Elena hut.

Day 6: Hike from Kitandara hut to Guy Yeoman hut

After breakfast hike through the base of Mount Baker, continue to the south side of the Rwenzori Mountain, the walk along muddy descent continues, through rock shelter at Bujangolo, the base camp for the historic expedition by the Duke of Abruzzi in 1906.Dinner and overnight at Guy Yeoman hut located at river Mubuku

Day 7: Hike from Guy Yeoman to Nyabitaba and Nyakalengija

After breakfast hike down to Nyabitaba through the bamboo forests as you head to Nyabitaba hut where you will have a stopover for lunch, after the hike down to Nyakalengija, you will reach Nyakengija late in the afternoon whereby you can choose to drive back to Entebbe or Kampala or spend a night in Kasese town or go to nearby Queen Elisabeth national park which is just 30 minutes drive from Kasese.
