Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park-Conservation Area is the biggest protected area in Uganda, at 5.025km. The conservation area includes Murchison Falls National Park, Bugungu Wildlife Reserve, Karuma Wildlife Reserve, and the South Budongo Forest.

The park’s altitude ranges from 619 meters at the delta on Lake Albert and 1.292 meters at Rabongo Hill, the area is traversed by the Victoria Nile River, which connects Lake Kyoga with Lake Albert.

Named after the marvelous falls on the river, which encounters a narrow cleft in the Rift Valley Escarpment, and is transformed into a froth of thunderous white water, with no comparison to any other site in East Africa. The vegetation in Murchison Falls National Park is characterized by Savannah, River Nile, Forest, and Woodland.

Species

There are 76 mammal species, including Giraffes, Elephants, Lions, Leopards, Spotted Hyenas, Kobs, bushbucks, Waterbuck, Oribi, and Jackal. With abundant primates too’ the park is home to Olive baboons, Blue, and red-tailed monkeys, and black-and-white colobus, the savanna-dwelling patas monkey is only found here and in Kidepo Valley National Park. Alongside 800 chimpanzees found in Budongo Forest and Kaniyo Pabidi and Budongo Forests.

Murchison Falls National Park is one of the best birding sites in Uganda with varied habitats Uganda’s largest park makes it home to a variety of birds with 451 species including the Shoe billed Stork, the Goliath Heron, elegant Grey Crowned Cranes.

While on your boat safari you will catch views of the Blue-headed Coucal, Swamp Flycatcher, Squacco Heron, African Jacana, Sandpipers, Denham’s Bustard, Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill, Black-billed Barbet, Black-headed Gonolek, Eastern Grey Plantain-eater, Piapiac, Silverbird, Weaver Birds, Pied, Giant and Malachite Kingfishers, Red-throated Bee-eater, White-browed Sparrow Weaver, Speckle-fronted Weaver and African Quail-Finch along the Nile.

Boat trip from Para along the River Nile up to the Murchison Falls 17km, to see Elephants, Buffaloes, Waterbuck, Hippos, Crocodiles, Marine Birds like Cormorants, Pelicans, Herons, African Fish Eagle, and Shoebill Stork. Hike to the top of the falls, to have a closer look from the top of the exciting and spectacular Murchison Falls, Game Drives north of River Nile, and at Lake Albert Delta (Bulgy, Albert, and Queen’s tracks). Sportfishing (Nile Perch and Tigerfish), in the River Nile above and below the fall, Chimpanzee tracking, and Bird watching are done from Budongo and Kaniyo Papidi Forest Nature Reserve.
