Queen Elizabeth National Park at 1978 sq km in size is situated south of the Rwenzori Mountains, bordering with DR Congo and including two lakes George and Edward, which are connected through the natural Kazinga Channel.
It has an Eco System made of Wetland and open Savannah areas, on an altitude of 910 meters at the location of Lake Edward. The park boasts a high biodiversity with landscapes including savannah, bushland, wetlands and lush forests rendering it one of the most scenic and popular parks in Uganda
Species
Queen Elizabeth National Park records a large number of animals, including 95 mammal species (among them Elephants, Lions, Leopards, Uganda Kobs, Buffaloes, Jackals, Spotted Hyenas) and 10 Primate species, like Chimpanzees, Vervet monkeys, Blue Monkeys, Red‐tailed Monkeys, Black and White Colobus, Olive Baboons.
The list of Birds is of 606 species recorded, possibly the highest in any of the African National Parks.The park’s remarkable birdlist exceeds to that of the neighboring Virunga National Park. Among these include African skimmer, Chapins flycatcher, Pink-backed pelicans, Papyrus canary, Shoebill stork, martial eagle, black-rumped buttonquail as well as the great flamingos.
The park has five levels of vegetation namely; the bushy grassland, Acacia woodland, Lakeshore or swamp vegetation along with forest grassland. The grasslands of the park settles wildlife such as Cape buffalo, Uganda kob, waterbuck, warthlog, lion, leopard, hyena, giant forest hog as well as elephants. Topis can only be discovered in Ishasha and forest primate found in Kyambura gorge and Maramagambo forest.
