Tourist activities that can be done in Kingi before or after gorilla tracking in Rwanda?

Kingi is located in the Musanze District of the Northern Province of Rwanda, Kinigi is also where the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park which makes it the most visited area by tourists in Rwanda, Musanze district is the main business center, and the government administrative and commercial services for Northern Province of Rwanda.

For the visitors visiting Volcanoes national park, Kinigi offers great views of the Virunga mountains which range from DR conga, Uganda, and Rwanda so Kinigi and Musanze are the main basses for those visiting the Volcanoes National Park for its popular gorilla tracking, golden monkey tracking, mountain hiking, Dain Fossey grave among other activities that can be done in the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

Talking of what to see in Kinigi after gorilla tracking in Rwanda, there is so much to do around Kinigi in Musanze one of the most beautiful towns in East Africa so those who are planning to Kinigi in Musanze also well know Ruhengeri, this article is going to guide to find the what to do in Kinigi after gorilla tracking in Rwanda, you might also like our articles about the cost of East African Tourist Visa which allows multiple entries to Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

Details of what to see in Kinigi after gorilla tracking in Rwanda Musanze District?

When you talk about a safari in Rwanda many people only think about gorilla tracking as the key tourist attraction at Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi of Musanze district home to the endangered mountain gorilla, yes gorilla tracking is the most popular tourist activity in Rwanda and Africa but it is an expensive venture many of the people in the world where by to see gorillas in Rwanda it will cost you $1500 per person for only the permit.

Remember in the whole world there are only 4 places where one can see these endangered mountain gorillas Volcanoes national park is one of the 4 parks, others include Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park both parks are located in Uganda and their Gorilla permit costs only $700 per person to see gorillas in the either of the parks, lastly the fourth place in Virunga national park in Dr-Congo where the permit costs only $500 per person but due to insecurities in Congo, we are not recommending people trek gorillas in Congo we are still not sure of the security situation so currently the only save places to see and trek mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda.

Many tourists contact us comparing the high price of Rwanda gorilla permit and we advise them to go trek in Uganda where gorilla permit price is more affordable and budget-friendly, in fact, the 4 gorilla national parks next to each other are only separated by international borders so for example if you are already in Rwanda you can easily cross the border to Uganda via Cyanika border in Kisoro and go trekking gorillas in Bwindi forest or in Mgahinga and after cross back to Rwanda on the same day.

At Volcanoes National Park Head Quarters in Kinigi Musanze

Hike to Dian Fossey’s grave at Karisoke research center?

A hike to Dian Fossey Tomb is a full-day activity that can be done any day throughout the year and it has no age limit provided your fitness level is good because your fitness is the one that determines whether you can manage or not. Dian Fossey was one of the first primatologists who came to Rwanda, Uganda, and DR Congo to study mountain gorillas’ behaviors in their natural habitat in 1967 but she was later murdered by poachers in 1985 at her Karisoke research camp in Volcanoes national park of Rwanda.

The reason why there is gorilla tracking today is because of Dian Fossey who discovered how to habituate mountain gorillas so that they can get used to human presence hence allowing tourists and other visitors to trek them, at Kisoro tours we can arrange the hike to Dian Fossey grave, on the hike you will get the opportunity to learn a lot more about her work with the mountain gorillas in Africa.

Visit Twin Lakes-Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo

Burera and Ruhondo are close to each other which makes many locals to beave that the two lakes are twins, the two lakes are located close to the border of Uganda with remarkable scenery, and amazing views of the Virunga volcano mountains, for those who have visited lake Bunyonyi in Kabale Uganda, these twin lakes have the similar natural futures’, it is also one of the best places to go for bird watching in Rwanda and it is just about 30 minutes’ driveway from Kinigi in Musanze.

Activities at Lake Burera and Ruhondo include bird watching, an interactive local community village walk, and canoeing with local fishermen among many other activities that can be done at Lake Burera and Ruhondo.

A visit to Musanze Caves

The Musanze caves were formed during the formation of the volcanoes in the Virunga mountains, during the formation the molten rock moving underneath left behind tunnels which were called Musanze caves because it is located near Musanze town, Musanze caves were used by some Rwanda Kings as shelter during the war when they were fighting with other tribes, during the tour of Musanze caves everyone is subjected to have a torch, helmet, and gloves which will be provided by caves management, the tourists and other visitors who have never experienced total darkness in the life, then on this tour, they will. Musanze cave tour costs $50 per person and the whole experience takes about 3 hours exploring the caves.

Golden monkeys in Volcanoes park

Golden Monkey tracking in Volcanoes national park

Like gorillas, golden monkeys can be seen in Rwanda and Uganda DR-Congo, Golden monkeys are also endangered species, and this is one of the activities that can be done while in Kinigi Musanze Rwanda after or before gorilla tracking, Golden monkey tracking is easier if compared to gorilla tracking because golden monkeys live on the lower slopes of the volcanoes national park.

Golden Monkey tracking permits cost only $100 per person and can be booked through trusted tour operators like us or book it directly from Rwanda Development Board (RDB) at the head offices in Kigali.

.Go for one Mt Bisoke or Karisimbi hiking

Rwanda has two main volcanoes that can be hiked in Kinigi Musanze, hiking Mt Bisoke takes one full day while Mt Karisimbi takes two full days to hike to the peak and back, at Kisoro Tours we usually recommend to our clients the 1 Day Mount Bisoke hiking because it is only one day hike and also cheaper than Mt Karisimbi in terms of costs, for example, Mt Bisoke hiking permits cost only $75 per person while Mt Karisimbi hiking permit costs $400 per person per hike for 2 days.

Tour of the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village in Kinigi

when one talks about what to see in Kinigi after gorilla tracking in Rwanda, personally I think Iby “iwacu cultural village would be given the first priority. This Cultural village is where you get all information you need to know about Rwandan culture and tribes, Iby iwacu Cultural village in Kinigi started as a project to support and help former poachers as an alternative source of income and also benefit from tourism, travelers coming to Rwanda for mountain gorilla tracking in Volcanoes national park can visit cultural Village for a cultural experience either after or before gorilla tracking.

How to get Kinigi in Musanze by road?
